For teachers · Preparation
Before you teach
Begin with a sourced resource and a clear learning purpose. This guide helps you check what a resource supports, whose knowledge it includes and what preparation it needs.
1. Name the people and place
Identify the author, Nation or community and the place connected to the resource. First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives are distinct. Keep an account tied to its named source, rather than presenting it as a teaching shared by everyone.
NCCIE explains that its lessons are connected to the Land and People where they originate. Read a lesson’s acknowledgement protocol and consider how its context differs from the place where you teach.
2. Check voice, access and permissions
Look for work created by Indigenous authors or made with substantial Indigenous contributions. FNESC/FNSA’s resource-selection guidance distinguishes this from accuracy alone.
Check the resource’s sources, audience, review date and use terms. Keep attribution with anything you share. A public resource or a WolfWhale illustration does not establish community permission or review.

3. Connect the learning to your classroom
Choose a grade and subject/course, read the provincial outcome and indicators, and decide what students will do to show their learning. WolfWhale’s connections are suggested starting points. Review the activity’s fit, accessibility, materials and time.

Use a prepared lesson to preview an activity, change its teaching options, or export a plan with sources. Unit plans currently remain drafts with their review status shown.
4. Follow local guidance
NCCIE encourages teachers to connect with communities and organizations where they live. When inviting a guest or adapting local knowledge, agree on what may be taught, attributed, recorded and shared. Check the individual source and community’s guidance; this page cannot authorize cultural teaching.
